Basic Stone Rodding Instructions
by Daniel Wait
- Flip the stone over and make sure you have background around your sink and front edge
- Using air, dry the area both in front of the sink and behind
- Using a straight-edge, mark a line with a pencil extending 6" beyond the sink
- Using a tile saw or a worm saw and a 1/4" tuck point blade cut along your pencil mark 3/8" deep for the entire line
- Insert your rods (1/4" x 3/8" x length of cut) into the two cut lines along with a flowing epoxy. (recommended: Touchstone Clear Gel Flowing Epoxy)
- Using a blade or a scraper cut all excess epoxy away from the back of the slab
- Let dry and if need be sand the two rods back down to flush. I would also do this the last thing of the day so the piece would be ready for work installation in the morning
- I would always advise to rod every kitchen sink and some of your bathroom sinks depending on the size of the sink and the clearance from front of the sink to the front of the counter top
- There is a video available, produced by the NTC, that will show this whole process. It is called Rodding and Repair of Stone Countertops - Video.
